Is Jazz Band Blast (JBB) open to anyone?
Yes, anyone who knows the basics of reading music notation may attend JBB. This includes adults, music teachers, students, as well as people from any location even if outside New Brunswick.
What happens if I play a traditionally non-jazz instrument (i.e. clarinet, euphonium, horn, flute, bassoon, oboe, percussion, etc.)?
Clarinet would play tenor sax or trumpet parts. Euphonium & bassoon can easily play trombone parts. We can add auxiliary percussion or mallet percussion easily to songs as there are often parts for those instruments or easily configured with traditional jazz rhythm section. Flute, horn, and oboe would involve some transposition and/or writing out of parts. If we know you will be attending for sure, then we will work toward having that ready for you.
Is it a must to have experience playing jazz music before?
Absolutely not! While it certainly will help if you have experience, will be working on a wide range or music from beginner to medium levels and teacher you the basics of jazz. Our goal is to have fun first and come away having learned something while spending a great weekend together making music!
Is this open to students as well as adults?
Yes, we encourage ANYONE who knows the basics of reading music notation to attend.
How much does it cost to attend JBB?
The cost for this event is only $20 and it also enrolls you automatically as a Gold Member of the New Brunswick Band Association. You can view the other benefits of membership by clicking here. We will have snacks, coffee, and water on-site. Accommodations are your responsibility but we have a great deal with our preferred hotel which you can find by clicking here.
Do I have to already be a member of a pre-existing band or NBBA to attend JBB?
No, we do ask that you register on our registration page and that will mean you become a new member of the NBBA.
Will I get a chance to view the music before the JBB weekend?
Yes, samples of the sheet music will be made available by Nov. 5 as well as reference audio recordings of the potential pieces for the weekend. Not all songs listed on the JBB Repertoire page will be performed in the final concert at the end of the weekend but, we will read through most of them.
What is the schedule for the JBB weekend?
The weekend runs from Friday Nov. 16 to Sunday Nov. 18. The full JBB Agenda can be viewed by clicking here.
Do I need to wear anything specific for the final concert on Sunday?
We realize that some home bands have their own uniforms and you are welcome to wear that if you wish to show the different bands we all come from. If no home band uniform, you can simply wear dark colours on the bottom and either a plan white or black shirt.
If I previously registered for the October Band Blast event, do I need to do anything else?
You only have to register again, if you did not check off that you were attending the JBB weekend. It's not a big deal if you register more than once if you don't remember what you checked off or if you need to change any details. We would encourage you to also attend our Concert Band Blast happening at Mount Allison University in may of 2019. It is never too early to get signed up and stay informed.
