We are excited to announce that the conductor for the first ever Jazz Band Blast will be Jeff MacQuarrie!
Jeff was born and raised in New Glasgow, NS where he was very active as a young musician studying with Andrew Alcorn. His passion for music encouraged him to pursue further studies by and attending St. Francis Xavier University where he studied both classical and jazz trumpet performance in addition to music education. He continued his trumpet studies as well as conducting under the tutelage of James Hargreaves. Jazz studies under Greg Carter, Gene Smith and Skip Beckwith provided Jeff with a wealth of training which he used from a young age to also begin teaching others. Earning a B.A. in Music (with Honours in trumpet performance), he also went on to complete his 2 year Bachelor of Education degree at St. FX.
An early love of music gave Jeff many opportunities such as: principle trumpet of the Nova Scotia Youth Wind Ensemble for 10 years; trumpet with Nova Scotia Youth Orchestra; principle trumpet of the National Youth Band of Canada for 2 years; lead trumpet with St. FX Big Band for 6 years; teaching instrumental music at various levels of NS schools; top soloist at local and provincial music festivals and second place at the national level.
In 1999, Jeff moved to Bathurst, NB and became the full-time music teacher at Bathurst High School. Growing the existing band program and incorporating other aspects of music and technology has been Jeff's focus. He now conducts several choirs, several bands and ensembles, community jazz band, drama and full-scale Broadway musicals, in addition to teaching classroom music. An advocate for change and growth in music education, Jeff is currently the President of the New Brunswick Band Association and is looking forward to working with you this year. Be sure to attend the first ever NBBA Jazz Band Blast which will be hosted by Jeff and the Phantom Jazz Band in Bathurst from Nov. 16-18, 2018. You may contact Jeff directly through e-mail [email protected]
